In May 2009, City Therapy's Christian Platts returned to Malawi, for the charity FOMO (Friends of Mulanje Orphans). He last visited the HIV stricken country in 2005 and had a strong desire to return to the country to help further. Malawi has a population of 12million, and 1 millon of those are children orphaned by AIDS, many of whom are themselves suffering from the disease. The country is in the grip of an epidemic, and a whole generation of adults are being lost to the disease, leaving their children to bring up their siblings, to try and feed them, to try and keep a roof (of sorts) over their heads and to keep them alive. Imagine your 9 year old child, homeless and looking after their younger siblings, and imagine the state of the country when these children have grown up, without an education and without parents to pass down essential farming skills and knowledge learned from their ancestors; all this will be lost and the country will fall further into despair.

Christian and the team visited the FOMO Orphanages which look after a total of 5000 children every day, distributing blankets, soap, books and school equipment, and other necessities on behalf of the charity.
Christian spent time training a 17 year old FOMO Orphan (Rashid Chitsulo) in Sports Massage, so he can help to deal with chronic pains and help to boost the immune systems of other Orphans (and villagers) suffering with HIV/AIDS. He has already been putting his new skills into practice, and earning money for the newly opened Medical Centre in Mulanje, and earning himself a wage of £0.40 per hour for his treatments. That doesn't sound much, but the average tea pickers wage is £0.38 per day. City Therapy and Active Health Groups have decided to support his ongoing learning, along with 2 other local Malawians, and hope in 12-18 months to find a way to get the 3 over to do the AHG Sports Therapy Diploma.

Christian has returned from Malawi with a new appreciation for life, and kindly asks that if you have taken the time to read this far, that you donate just £5 to the charity by visiting www.justgiving.com/challengemulanje. (Please include Christian's name in the comments box). £100 a day feeds all 5000 of the children FOMO look after; just £5 pays to feed 250 children per day.
Justgiving sends your donation straight to Friends of Mulanje Orphans and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. I hope you'll join us in supporting Friends of Mulanje Orphans.
